Get a little bit of Vitamin “Sea” in your life by enjoying what Newport Beach has to offer you after NIFA’s SutureStar workshops. Part unspoiled nature – part man-made marvel, this Orange County destination features plenty of stunning views, walkways and activities that will take your breath (and stress) away.
If you’re looking for more pizzazz than the scrubs you’ll be wearing during our training workshops, Newport Beach is luxury shopper’s paradise, as it is home to Fashion Island Mall and South Coast Plaza. These are not your ordinary malls – they’re the sailor’s whistle with fancy stores such as Neiman Marcus, Cartier, Tiffany, Jimmy Choo, Mikimoto to name a few.
August is the ideal time to visit, as there are a number of outdoor concerts and cultural events going on such as the Summer Concert Series with world-class music, fine wine and dining at the intimate Back Bay Amphitheater, located in the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach. If you’re looking for a more mellow music scene, check out the Marriott-Sunset Jazz at Newport series on Wednesday nights and Concerts on the Green on Sundays. Last but not least is the Pageant of the Masters in nearby Laguna Beach which takes place in August – the Pageant of the Masters is arguably one of the most unique productions in the world, where audiences are enchanted and amazed by ninety minutes of living pictures, recreations of classical and contemporary works of art with real people posing to look exactly like their counterparts in the original pieces.
If you’re into sight-seeing and tourist attractions, Corona Del Mar (Spanish for Crown of the Sea) is a quaint village in Newport Beach. Stroll the high-end boutiques and botanic gardens. Eat at one of the many fine restaurants. Take a walk on the jetty at sunset and take in the spectacular views. Balboa Island is Newport’s most famous tourist attraction. Take a ferry from the island to the peninsula, where you can buy a frozen banana on Balboa Island, just like the ones featured in the television show “Arrested Development” (which was partially filmed here). On the peninsula you can ride the waves at beaches such as the wedge, hop on a boat for a sightseeing tour or play arcade games and go on rides at the Fun Zone.
If you’re looking for outdoor activities, Newport harbors miles of hiking and cycling trails, surfing and sailing. At Crystal Cove State Park in nearby Laguna Beach you can hike, mountain bike or swim. Walk along the beach and check out the tide pools, or see the house where the movie, “Beaches” was filmed. Enjoy a cocktail on the beach at the Beachcomber, while listening to the soothing sounds of the waves crashing nearby. You can rent sailboats, kayaks, electric boats, pedal boats and stand up paddleboards at the Newport Dunes Waterpark. If SutureStar workshops don’t get your adrenaline going enough, the truly adventurous can even fly jetpacks through Jetpack America in the Newport Harbor.
